Catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico
Guests: Wilma Subra, Richard Charter
and Sharon Benjamin

MP3 File

The Deep Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is an unprecedented environmental disaster with major implications for people, communities, marine life and coastal estuaries. Many of the consequences remain unknown, but these guests have knowledge and insight. Wilma Subra is a scientist committed to protecting the environment, health and safety of citizens. In 1981 she started the Subra Company, a chemistry lab and environmental consulting firm in New Iberia, LA. She provides technical assistance to citizens in the US and abroad She served a seven year term as Vice Chair of the Environmental Protection Agency National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology and a five year term on the National Advisory Committee of the US representative to the Commission for Environmental Cooperation. She has been working on several aspects of the Gulf disaster. Richard Charter is a Senior Policy Advisor for Marine Programs for Defenders of Wildlife, working on offshore drilling issues with local and state elected officials and the conservation community for over thirty years, and is also engaged in restoring coastal ecosystems. In addition, Richard presently serves as the Chair of the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council. Sharon Benjamin, PhD, is principal of Alchemy, a Washington DC based management consulting practice. She is a seasoned organizational executive who has served as a CEO and directed institutional development and finance. Her positions have included Vice President for Marketing for the Rails to-Trails Conservancy in DC and Director for Major Gifts for the Union of Concerned Scientists in Cambridge MA. She earned her doctorate in organizational behavior from the Union Institute and University in Cincinnati OH, where she has co-taught three leadership seminars. She has been active in the non-profit community, serving as Treasurer of the Board Earthworks, chair of the Board of Directors of Bluevoice.org, and a member of Oceana’s Board of Governors. Every supply chain is made up of virtuous or vicious circles. In a finely tuned supply chain, each connection improves the last one.
